FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA – On Wednesday, public schools in Fairfax County canceled extracurricular activities on school grounds. There was no change in the lessons during the school day.
After-school cancellations at FCPS apply to extracurricular activities, inter-school competitions, team practices, field trips, after-school programs in college, vocational learning and training courses, academic courses. adult community education, adult high school and GED, recreation and community programs. use by external groups and virtual and in-person back-to-school parties. School-age child care centers will be open until 6:15 p.m., but families are urged to pick up children early if possible.
The school district did not cite a reason for the cancellations, but the National Meteorological Service expects Ida’s remains to bring heavy rain and flood risk on Wednesday. The area has already experienced thunderstorms overnight, which has caused flooding and blackouts in parts of Fairfax County. Parts of Fairfax County are subject to a flood warning until noon, and the entire area is under flash flood watch until Thursday morning. A tornado watch is in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday.
