6 Unique Extracurricular Activities for NJ Kids Who Hate Sports

This is the time of year when you begin to schedule your child for the myriad of activities they will be participating in during the school year.

It’s almost like you’re not playing traditional sports, there’s nothing else to do, and you’re nowhere to be found.

What if your child doesn’t like an after-school art class? Not all kids are the type to take basketball, soccer, or art lessons after school, but that doesn’t mean they should be bored at home after school.

New Jersey specifically has tons of unique and cool extracurricular activities that are sure to spark your child’s interest.

I know it’s a sport. But not the kind they are used to. Fencing is a great sport for kids who might love their toy swords a little too much. The Hub City Fencing Academy at Edison was introduced as an excellent program for children as young as 7 years old. They have a 10 week program that gives a comprehensive introduction to the sport so your child can learn the right way. It’s also a great sport for those with more strategy-oriented kids.

Also a sportswoman. But the one that appeals to the non-athletic type. Many kids are obsessed with different types of weapons from a young age and archery could be a fun way for them to aim better and have a bit of competition. X-Ring Archers Archery Schoollocated in Lambertville is a popular program that has seen many young people participate in the Junior Olympics.

If your kids always ask you to help in the kitchen, this is the perfect solution. Marlboro Young Chefs Academy is very popular in New Jersey and teaches children how to cook among other skills like kitchen safety, etiquette, etc.

Gymnastics is a great sport if you don’t like sports and are looking to build strength or even conquer a fear. Bright Stars Academy in Egg Harbor is one of many gyms in the Jersey area with great gymnastics programs for kids in addition to swimming and ninja zone lessons. If you have kids with different interests, this can be a fun place to check out.

Who doesn’t like challenges? Rock climbing is a great way to overcome the fear of heights, learn coordination and also have a little competition. The NJ Rock Gym in Fairfield has rock climbing lessons that also include important lessons like the art of knotting and other survival skills.

Take your kids to one of the local music centers like school of rock Where Lakehouse Academy of Music. Not only will they learn an instrument, but they can gain confidence and join a real rock and roll band. My kids did it and it was one of the best memories of their lives. And mine too.
