The Gauteng Department of Education has extended the admission placement period until November 30.
To date, 43,797 grade 1 and 8 students have not been placed in schools.
According to Steve Mabona, spokesperson for the department, 310,350 applications were submitted for grades 1 and 8. Among them, 27,563 candidates did not submit any documents, while 282,787 submitted the required documents. The placement period began in September and was scheduled to end on October 31.
“The placement period began on September 23 and continues until all learners are placed. During this period, the department remains committed to placing the 282,787 who submitted documents.
“To date, 234,290 candidates have been placed, while 43,797 have not been placed. It is of concern that around 4,700 applicants have yet to accept job offers. Parents are encouraged to accept placement offers as these places will not be available after a period of seven days, ”said Mabona.
411 schools have reached their capacity. Most of these schools have already expanded their capacity to accommodate as many learners as possible. Applicants who cannot be accommodated in these schools are placed in schools with available places.
We are fully aware of what is going on in our district offices. Our sincere apologies, we are getting additional staff to support us. Unfortunately, being a Sunday we do not have a full complement of staff, but we are dealing with the situation. I’m on my way to the neighborhoods

Parents should keep in mind that the regulated admission criteria favor placement in the order of the following categories:
• The place of residence of the candidate learner is closest to the school in the feeding area
• The candidate learner has a brother or sister who attends school
• The workplace of at least one of the parents of the candidate learner is in the feeding zone of the school.
• The place of residence of the candidate learner is within a radius of 30 km around the school.
• The place of residence of the candidate learner is beyond a radius of 30 km around the school.
To facilitate a fair placement process, the above criteria are strictly observed. Parents must therefore accept the placements offered by the department because they cannot be changed.
The internships will be carried out daily until all learners have received schools. Applicants who have not received any placements to date are advised to log into the system to view the status of the placement and / or contact the nearest district office.
The problem is that our staff members have been intimidated and in some cases attacked. We must persuade them to return to work. We are trying to resolve the stalemate as quickly as possible. The main problem is the parents who did not accept the offers and those who did not submit documents. https://t.co/muQlNIkOpp

Parents who do not have Internet access can go to the school or district office where they will be helped.
“Parents need to be assured that the department is obligated to place all learners and, as such, all learners will be placed. However, it may not be in the schools that they want. It should be noted that the schools make every effort to welcome everyone in accordance with the admission rules. We know that some of our officials have been assaulted, equipment and buildings vandalized. We want to call on parents to remain calm and not to resort to violence in our offices, ”said MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
For any questions, parents should call the GDE call center on 0800 000 789.
