Bangor School Department announces new superintendent


BANGOR, Maine (WABI) – Bangor now has a new school principal.

The Bangor school committee voted in favor of hiring James Tager.

He has spent more than 35 years in teaching.

He currently works as a Superintendent of Schools for Franklin West Supervisory Union in Vermont.

Prior to that, he was Superintendent of Schools for Flagler Schools in Florida from 2017-2020.

It was selected in a national search with the help of the Maine School Management Association.

Tager went through a list of things he wants to accomplish at Wednesday’s school committee meeting, including making connections.

“Relationships are what this job is all about. Success begins with personalized connections between students, teachers and administrators. Your extracurricular participation cost is 95%. Students have something to come to school for school. They come to school, so it must continue.

“His experience and vision over his 39 years of study will guide and improve teaching and learning in the Bangor School District, and most importantly, Jim is very passionate about mentoring and improving graduation rates. .

Tager will start on July 1.

He succeeds former Superintendent Betsy Webb who retired last year.

The Bangor School Department posted the following message:

“The Bangor School Board has appointed Mr. James R. Tager as the next Superintendent of Schools effective July 1, 2021 to succeed Dr. Betsy Webb, Ed.D., who retired in October 2020. Mr. Tager is currently the superintendent. schools for Franklin West Supervisory Union in Vermont.

The selection is the result of national research conducted with the assistance of the Maine School Management Association and a local search committee that produced qualified candidates from various geographic and professional backgrounds.

Mr. Tager was Superintendent of Schools for Franklin West Supervisory Union in Vermont from 2020. He was also Superintendent of Schools for Flagler Schools in Florida from 2017 to 2020. In the Volusia County School District in Florida, Mr. Tager worked for thirty-five years as a teacher, K-12 program director, principal and deputy superintendent. Tager holds a Master of Arts in Administration and Supervision from Nova Southeastern University and a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary and Special Education from Flagler College.

The school committee is satisfied with the outcome of this research process. Ultimately, Mr. Tager proved to be in the best position to advance the vision of the Ministry. His track record of academic excellence, along with his passion for working with students and families, demonstrates his ability to be successful in this role.

“We asked the community for feedback on the desirable qualities of our next superintendent. People told us they wanted someone who was approachable, approachable, personable and collaborative. They asked for a leader who will create an inclusive learning environment and who will prioritize Bangor’s high academic record.
