City of Chanlder, nonprofit helps provide school supplies for children

The city and a nonprofit organization helped students prepare for the next school year with backpacks and other school supplies.

CHANDLER, Ariz. — It looks like summer has just begun, but some towns in the Valley are already preparing for students to return to school.

“Operation: Back to School” is underway in Chandler and with the help of the city and For Our City Chandler, children will return to class with backpacks full of essentials.

“Watching the kids’ eyes light up, they want the blue or the comic book hero, they have awesome smiles on both the volunteers and the families,” said Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke.

Saturday’s community effort served students in kindergarten and kindergarten through 12th grade. More than 3,000 backpacks have been filled with folders, pencils and notebooks for the first day of school next week.

“I see bright optimism on the faces of some kids and of course others who aren’t ready to give up computer games and go back to school,” Hartke said.

Mayor Hartke said the parents also praised the charity event.

“People are so happy, I see parents saying, yes, it’s time to go back to school and they are ready for their children to go back to school,” he said.

Donations for the event are accepted year-round, and for more information, visit the nonprofit organization’s website.
