MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Parents will have the chance to save money this weekend while preparing for the upcoming school year. Alabama’s back-to-school sales tax exemption is about to begin, but it’s not just about paper and pencils.
Starting at 12:01 a.m. Friday, you can get some important back-to-school items tax-free. This covers clothing, school supplies, some electronics. Even diapers are included, as will clothing that costs $100 or less per item will qualify.
School supplies must cost less than $50 each. Electronic devices, like tablets and laptops, should cost less than $750.
This is a great opportunity for parents to save money.
“So you can save up to 10% in some parts of the state, especially Montgomery County, because the city, county, and state are waiving their tax here. So you can save up to 10 % So if you’re talking about a $750 laptop, that’s a savings of $75. So it can add up. Plus, students are back to in-person learning. So they’re going needing uniforms and clothing that maybe they didn’t have last year,” said Alabama Retail Association spokeswoman Nancy Dennis.
The Alabama Retail Association has a reference guide with more details.
The party will end at midnight on Sunday.
