LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) – A collection of school supplies is being conducted by colleges in the Coulee area for Afghan refugees currently housed at Fort McCoy.
The effort, called Operation Allies Welcome School Supply Drive, was started by a group of community partners, including Great Rivers United Way and the La Crosse School District, and educators from UW-La Crosse, University of from Viterbo and Western Technical College to support classrooms at Fort McCoy for the nearly 2,000 refugees taking courses at the base as part of efforts to help them adjust to life in the United States.
Heather Linville, director of UW-La Crosse and associate professor and teaching English to speakers of other languages, said after seeing the need for first-hand supplies, college instructors realized that they could help by delivering supplies to classrooms at Fort McCoy.
“We worked with the Department of Homeland Security and Fort McCoy to create a wish list of essential educational materials,” Linville said. “By purchasing items from the wish list, the public can help our Afghan guests in a very real way. “
For anyone who wants to contribute, they can purchase items from the campaign’s Amazon Wish List. Purchases will be delivered directly to Fort McCoy to expedite the refugee procurement process.
