Florence students receive free school supplies at drive-thru event

FLORENCE, SC (WBTW) – As students in Florence prepare to start school on Monday, it’s time for a lot to stock up on school supplies. A drive-thru event in Florence aimed to help kids gear up for the school year.

“Our community is ready to help people,” said Cora Brooks. “It’s so good to know that there is still goodness in the world.” Brooks showed up to the event with her granddaughter to help her prepare for class. Once there, she discovered that she could purchase supplies for her other grandchildren as well.

“They’re going to be really surprised when I call their parents and tell them I have supplies for them,” Brooks said. The Back-to-School Jump-Start event was held at Williams Middle School and hosted by Select Health of South Carolina.

“We just wanted to make sure the kids and families are ready to go back to school,” said Lolita Furby, Community Outreach Manager at Select Health. “We’re here with other local vendors, the city of Florence, Pee Dee Healthy Start. We have someone from a local church who distributes school supplies and non-perishable items. Furby said it provided supplies to 75 families within the first ten minutes of the trip.

“We just love to be here in the community to support our mission,” Furby said. “You are getting some supplies and I hope this can help you start the school year.” Organizers were hoping the event might make the start of the new school year a bit easier.
