SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WXYZ) – The eighth annual backpack project provides free backpacks and school supplies to Detroit metro students thanks to law firm Mike Morse.

Since the start of the program, more than 200,000 backpacks and supplies have been distributed to students in the region.

The company continues its partnership with the Detroit Public School Community District and organizes giveaways in other districts.

DPSCD students will receive their backpacks the first week of class at the school in which they are enrolled.

Students attending school in other districts are invited to attend the Big Tent Backpack event, which will take place Saturday, August 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the company’s Southfield office at 24901 Northwestern Hwy.

Backpacks will be distributed on a first come, first served basis to students in Kindergarten to Grade 5 accompanied by a parent or guardian. There will be games, gifts, food and more to help students prepare and get excited for the upcoming school year.

This year, law firm Mike Morse plans to provide approximately 30,000 backpacks to local students this year. Backpacks will contain pencils, shirts, paper, scissors, pencils, glue, and other classroom essentials.

“When I started this program in 2014, I always hoped it would grow to where it is today,” said Mike Morse. “Years go by, and yet there are children who need school supplies every year. So all I can do to help them is what I’m going to do. This is the goal of Project Backpack. Every year we try to make it bigger and better than the last. “
