A local mother brought local businesses and the Ithaca community together “to give kids the chance to go to school in style.” Children will be offered free haircuts, a free hairstyle, a new backpack and school supplies this Tuesday before the start of the school year later this week.

“Our hair is a celebration of our roots,” says Gloria Coicou, community advocate and local mom. “Something as simple as access to hair care is something we don’t think about as a community, but it’s a real issue. “
Coicou tells 14850 that she made a passionate appeal to the Tompkins County Community Foundation to get the project started and help prepare the kids to go back to school, and they were able to provide a grant. “It is important that children feel good about themselves before the school year,” she says. “It helps build confidence which, in turn, helps them progress academically. “
Veron Raymond, owner of Mane & Wigs, said in a statement: “I will do anything for the kids, it’s always about the kids.”
Children also receive “backpacks from designers like Adidas, Puma, Air Jordan, Minecraft and Fortnight,” which will be filled with more than pencils and erasers. “Each backpack contains almost everything on the children’s back-to-school supply list, including earbuds, pencil sharpeners, sharpies and a box of tissues,” the statement said. Chet Osadchey and his team from Cayuga Radio Group donated nearly 125 backpacks filled with school supplies.
The Staples store in Ithaca donated 75 backpack supply kits. “We’re trying to do our part to build community engagement and want to develop relationships,” said Joe Tompkins, director of Staples.
The Enfield Food Pantry and the Southern Tier Food Bank donated toiletries like shower gel, shampoo and argan oil. “We are proud to be a partner in efforts to serve the community and ensure that children have what they need to start the school year,” said Natasha Thompson, CEO of the Food Bank of the Southern Tier .
Cuts & Curls takes place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Tuesday, September 7 at businesses on South Cayuga Street in downtown Ithaca, between State and Green streets. Walk-in visits are welcome, but appointments will be given priority. Call 321-278-9172 to make an appointment.
“Everyone has been so gracious,” says Coicou, “I didn’t have to ask someone twice… everyone had the same goal and that was to support the children.
