Berhampur: Ganjam administration launched the One Student, One Plant campaign on World Environment Day on Sunday to increase green coverage in the district.
As part of this initiative, each student was invited to plant a sapling and take care of it throughout the year.
The administration also said that students who perform well in the reader will earn additional grades in their annual exam.
“We will give free saplings to every student, especially those studying in grades VI to X. They will plant the saplings on their school campuses, in public places and near their homes,” said Ganjam collector Vijay Amruta Kulange after launching the campaign in Brundaban government. High School, Hinjili.
“Various samples, including that of fruit trees, will be provided by the forestry, soil conservation and horticulture departments. The initiative aims to increase the neighborhood’s green coverage and involve students in the process,” Kulange added.
He also said officials would from time to time assess how the plants are cared for.
“The decision to award additional points to those who have performed well in training will be finalized after discussion with relevant officials,” the collector said.
The Ganjam district administration has also decided to plant about 8 lakh saplings under the Mukhyamantri Karma Tatpara Abhiyan, a state government initiative modeled after the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, and help create lasting community assets.
