Harrah’s will give away school supplies on Thursday |

Need help gathering the necessary school supplies for the upcoming school year?

Employees of Harrah’s Metropolis and other local businesses and organizations are once again teaming up to distribute school supplies collected through fundraisers and donations.

People can stop by the Metropolis Community Center on Thursday, August 4 starting at 5 p.m. to pick up items. The event is to run while supplies last and is open to the public.

Due to demand, adults with no children present are entitled to up to four student supplies. Once across the line, they can return to the back of the line for the chance to acquire more.

Starting at 4 p.m., Dental Safari Company, a mobile dentistry business specializing in children of all ages from birth to 18, will be on hand to offer dental checkups, cleanings, fluoride treatments and sealants at the need. Any child is eligible and it costs nothing to the family. Dental Safari accepts Illinois medical card and all private insurance. For more information about Dental Safari, visit dentalsafaricompany.com or Facebook.

The Massac County Drug Awareness Coalition will be distributing drug awareness buttons among other supplies. MCDAC’s mission is to provide leadership, education and resources to build and support communities of informed citizens, especially community youth, who are making healthy and safe choices by reducing substance abuse.

Other companies and organizations will also be present with documents and more.

“Starting a new school year can be very stressful for kids and parents alike,” said Chad Lewis, advertising and public relations manager for Harrah’s Metropolis. “Our goal for this event is to help alleviate stress and make their school year enjoyable for each of the children.”
