Houston-area school districts cancel after-school activities ahead of winter storm

Several Houston-area school districts announced plans to close campuses on Friday due to winter weather in the area.

Houston will experience wet conditions and freezing temperatures throughout the day Thursday.

The Houston-area districts that canceled after-school activities Thursday and campuses Friday are below:

  • The Houston Independent School District closed its schools and offices on Friday. It also canceled all extracurricular activities on Thursday due to freezing temperatures and the potential for worsening road conditions later in the day.
  • Tomball, Humble, Sheldon, Texas City, Waller, Friendswood, Galena Park, Dickinson, Clear Creek, Alief, Alvin, Katy, Klein, Spring, La Porte, Fort Bend, Cypress-Fairbanks, Conroe, Spring Branch, Deer Park, Huffman , Santa Fe, Aldine, Pearland, Pasadena, Crosby, Magnolia, Channelview, Conroe, Waller and Montgomery ISD announced on Thursday that school systems would be closed on Friday.
  • CISD Goose Creek and Lamar, Stafford Municipal School District, St. Mark’s Episcopal School and Cristo Rey Jesuit College Preparatory in Houston will also be closed on Friday.
  • La Porte ISD added that the activities, as well as the musical, will continue on Friday evening. Spring Branch ISD was expecting a decision Friday on Friday night and Saturday activities. Crosby ISD expects Friday evening activities to continue, citing an expected improvement in weather conditions by noon. Pearland ISD plans to resume operations on Friday afternoon.
  • The Barbers Hill Independent School District announced it would operate with its regular hours on Friday, with a final decision expected and “communicated via Remind” Friday at 4:30 a.m.
  • Harris County Department of Education buildings are scheduled to be closed Friday. The groundbreaking ceremony for its new adult education center scheduled for Friday has been cancelled; it is expected to be rescheduled.
  • Aldine, Alief, Channelview, Cleveland, Conroe, Crosby, Dickinson, Fort Bend, Galena Park, Goosecreek, Katy, Klein, Montgomery, Texas City, Tomball, Spring and Willis ISD as well as Stafford MSD also canceled all extracurricular activities Thursday. Spring ISD also canceled its school board work session.
  • Harmony Public Schools will have their “Houston North and Houston South/West districts” campuses closed on Friday.
  • Spring Branch ISD canceled all elementary and middle school extracurricular activities on Thursday. School activities will continue until 5 p.m.
  • Santa Fe ISD canceled all outdoor practices and events Thursday and Friday due to forecast weather conditions.
  • Cypress-Fairbanks ISD said all of its extracurricular activities would end at 5 p.m. Thursday.
  • Waller ISD announced it would dismiss the students two hours earlier on Thursday.
  • The Fort Bend and Dickinson ISDs decided on Thursday that after-school activities would also be canceled on Friday.

Houston-area colleges have also begun announcing closures:

  • The University of Houston — including its Sugar Land and Katy locations — will be closed Friday, with a scheduled return to normal operations Saturday. The University of Houston Clear Lake, UHCL Pearland and the Texas Medical Center will also be closed on Friday.
  • The University of St. Thomas will be closed Friday with classes being conducted online.
  • Rice University will conduct classes remotely on Friday, among other changes to its operations.
  • The College of the Mainland will be closed on Friday, with classes canceled at all locations.
  • The Texas Woman’s University campus in Houston will be closed on Friday and classes have been canceled.
  • Our Lady of the Lake University Houston campus will close at noon Thursday and is expected to open Friday.
  • All Lone Star Community College locations will close at 2 p.m. Thursday and remain closed Friday.
  • Prairie View A&M University campuses will close at noon Thursday and all classes after that time will be cancelled.
  • All Sam Houston State University locations will close at noon Thursday. Residences, Old Main and General’s Market will remain open.
  • All University of Houston Clear Lake classes beginning at or after 4 p.m. Thursday will be held virtually. All offices will remain open normal hours. Campus restaurants, Neumann and Pearland libraries, and recreation and wellness centers will close at 6 p.m. Shuttle services will operate until 6:30 p.m.
  • Classes, activities and operations at San Jacinto College are canceled Friday and are expected to resume Saturday.
