Hundreds of people receive free school supplies at Lancaster backpack drive

LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – The start of the school year is just around the corner, and with a mostly virtual school year, many students need to stock up on supplies.

Hundreds of people took advantage of a free giveaway on Saturday afternoon in Lancaster.

This was the 10th annual backpack competition hosted by State Representative Mike Sturla at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

A line of cars around the block showed Lancaster the need for school supplies.

“It’s really a collaborative effort, a lot of volunteers, a lot of people in the community who have given donations, foundations and things like that and corporate sponsors,” Sturla said.

The volunteers organized everything from breakfast to workbooks without parents worrying about the cost of it all.

“You try to buy a backpack, a uniform, sneakers, books, school supplies, all that stuff for four kids, the bill gets pretty high pretty quickly so it’s really a great way to make sure every child gets a good start in school this year, ”Sturla said.

800 of the 1,400 registered students came to the event behind the wheel.

Sturla has also partnered with Patients R Waiting, providing the first and second doses of the COVID vaccine inside Clipper Magazine Stadium for adults and children 12 and older.

“Almost overwhelmingly people have said ‘I’ve already had my vaccine’ which is great, but we just want to make sure there is no excuse as to why someone shouldn’t get the shot. “said Sturla.

Eduardo Torres received his second dose, wanting to protect those around him, including two elderly people in his church.

“One of them had a transplant, a lung transplant and we care about them. We don’t want to get sick and then approach them and then feel guilty, ”Torres said.

Sturla says vaccines and supplies go hand in hand, making sure everyone is happy and healthy for the fall.

If you haven’t already, you can still register online or on site. The contest runs from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday and Monday.
