Ibotta offers freebies at Walmart, Target

A popular cashback app and rewards platform is giving free school supplies to millions of students.

Ibotta announced on Wednesday that it is partnering with brands including Five Star, Kleenex, Skippy and Nature’s Own to “give students a free set of backpacks and lunch boxes to help ease the financial burden on families. as the 2021-2022 school year approaches.

Like other Ibotta offers, items in the “Back to School Free for All” program are free after discounts, while supplies last. They include a three-subject notebook, a 12-pack of Ticonderoga crayons, a box of tissues, and the ingredients for the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

The discount items, which combined are worth up to $20, can be purchased in-store and online at Walmart and online at Target, Instacart, HEB or Shipt.

However, depending on where you shop, items may not be 100% free after discounts and may cost a few cents each. Ibotta bases the discount on the manufacturer’s suggested retail price, which may vary.

Ibotta launched in late 2012 and has offered users $1 billion in rebates and cashback, CEO and founder Bryan Leach said in an interview with USA TODAY.

Last November, Ibotta made its biggest promotion and teamed up with Walmart, Campbell’s, Butterball, Coca-Cola to offer free Thanksgiving dinners.

To use Ibotta’s free back to school package – or select items from it – shoppers must download the free Ibotta app or browser extension and add the items to their shopping lists through either the other of the platforms.

Then shop in-store at Walmart or purchase the items at participating online retailers to earn 100% cash back deposited into your account.

Here’s how it works:

For Walmart in-store: Add the deals to your account on the app by clicking a plus sign, then purchase the discount items from Walmart stores. If you link your Walmart Pay account to Ibotta, you can get the money back when you use Walmart Pay at checkout. You can also “redeem” discounts in the app by scanning the barcode on your receipt. You will then earn cash back on qualifying purchases within 24 hours.

For online orders: When purchasing the promotion with Grocery Pickup and Delivery, make sure your Ibotta account is linked to the online retailer. Then add offers to your account and checkout online. You will be refunded 24 hours after the collection or delivery of your order.

Buying tip: Check to confirm that you are purchasing the discount items. In the app you can scan the barcodes of your items to verify and when using the browser extension you can verify your items with offer details.

Once a user earns $20 in rebates through Ibotta, they can withdraw their earnings through PayPal, deposit to your bank account, or select a digital gift card. Gift card options, most of which have a $20 minimum, include Amazon, Best Buy, Lowe’s, Starbucks, Walmart, Sephora, Panera Bread, and Victoria’s Secret.

According to Ibotta, the following items are free after 100% off, while supplies last, with a limit of one per user. However, the company claims that “offer value is based on the average retail price” suggested by the manufacturer.
