Kenwood children can get free book bags and school supplies at a back to school event

KENWOOD – Professional basketball player Linnae Harper will host the second That Harper Kid Back 2 School event for the community of Kenwood on Friday.

Children who attend will receive book bags filled with supplies, and families will receive free food, drink and entertainment from DJ Will The Thrill. The event is 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays at Kenwood Academy High School, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave.

The city’s health service will also offer vaccines against the coronavirus.

“The children deserve a good, fresh start to the school year,” Harper said in a statement. “This neighborhood event will be the free and energetic kickoff that children and their parents can enjoy.”

Harper founded the nonprofit That Harper Kid in 2019 to teach girls and young women basketball and life skills and inspire them to pursue their dreams.

Harper played basketball at Whitney Young Magnet High School and Ohio State University. She has also played professionally with the Chicago Sky.
