MANKATO, Minnesota (KEYC) – As a new school year approaches, community members are coming together to help families in need of supplies.

House of Worship held its sixth annual Love in Mankato distribution event on Sunday afternoon at Sibley Park. Love in Mankato donates essential items to all members of the community.

“We just love our community. We want to show how much we appreciate Mankato himself and give back to those who live here, ”said event coordinator Tanisha Mathis.

Mathis said school supplies, diapers and clothing were among the most in-demand items this year.

“We have diapers, baby clothes, formula, sanitary napkins. We have school supplies [and] backpacks full of school supplies. We have clothes, shoes, handbags, belts, ”Mathis explained.

Participant Micah Meyer added, “They can get it all for free, literally at no cost.”

Thousands of people have circled the park, stopping at barns and picnic shelters to purchase free goods in a store-like setting.

Meyer mentioned: “I saw family [and] lots of guests here. I would give it a nine and a half out of ten. That’s how busy it is here today.

All items were provided by local donors.

Mathis said: “We asked people from all over Mankato to help sponsor, to donate.”

Mathis said it was special to make parenting a bit easier during the pandemic.

“Just to see the families come and just to walk around and say hello, we have this, please come and receive, and it warms my heart, really,” Mathis explained.
