MARANA, Ariz. (KVOA) — The Marana Unified School District has partnered with Youth Education Supporters and will distribute backpacks full of school supplies on Thursday.
More than 1,000 backpacks are filled with notebooks, pencils, pens and everything students need for the year.
“It’s hard to understand how important it is for a child to have what everyone else has and to feel part of the group,” said Dot Santy, team leader with supporters of the education of the youth.
Youth Education Supporters sees the importance of students starting the school year with the right attitude and the right supplies. That’s why they’ve partnered with the Marana Unified School District to distribute backpacks full of school supplies to their students in need.
“It’s stressful for a kid,” Santy said. “They don’t know what they’re going to do or where they’re going to get supplies. And then they have the option to pick them up and it’s like Christmas. It’s pretty amazing.”
They raised enough money to fill 1,100 backpacks. This means that 1,100 students will be fully stocked with everything they need to start the year prepared.
“It’s wonderful to know that you’re helping others. It’s a very special feeling,” Santy shares.
The supplies are for students, but they also help parents.
“It really takes the stress off of parents having to go, but also the financial part. Backpacks and stuff, they’re not cheap,” says Tanya Read.
Read is a parent of students in the Marana Unified School District. She says her children are thrilled to receive their backpacks. She says “it’s amazing to see the kids and how excited they are when they receive them.”
The drive will be from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at the Early Learning Resource Center, 7651 N. Oldfather Rd.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Marana Unified School District initially planned a second day of distribution of school supplies on Friday. This event has since been canceled as the district has run out of backpacks to distribute.
