MONTCALM, WV (WVNS) – Students and staff at Montcalm Elementary School in Mercer County saw the devastation caused by tornadoes in Kentucky and they decided to band together and do something about it.

Montcalm students, parents and teachers donated crayons, pens, pencils, notebooks, backpacks and more to victims of the tornadoes that devastated Mayfield, Ky., earlier this month- this.

Principal Matthew Wright said the thousands of dollars in school supplies donated show Montcalm is a community with an incredibly giving spirit.

“Fortunately, we have a really good school community, the community as a whole,” Wright said. “They always come together on stuff like that. Really, we were kind of overwhelmed with the amount of stuff we brought.

Students at the school told 59 News they wanted to give back to help kids like them.

“I think it’s important that they don’t get held up,” student Savannah Wood said. “So they’re learning at the same speed as me, instead of learning something I’ve already learned.”

“I’m sorry you lost your home,” student Micah Phillips said. “But, we have school supplies for all of you.”

“They’ve been robbed all their lives and it feels good to be able to give them something back,” student Charles Wyatt said.

In total, over 10,000 individual items were donated. Title One Interventionist Tabitha Austin said she hopes the kids see that giving back and helping your neighbor is really what it’s about this time of year.

““Well, especially at this time of year, I think we need to give back to anyone who needs help,” Austin explained. “And I think our kids have done a terrific job.”

The donations were loaded onto trucks on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 and will be delivered to Mayfield, Kentucky in the coming days.
