Polar Plunge to raise funds for Essex school activities | News

ESSEX – Friends of Essex Primary School is hosting its second annual EES Polar Plunge fundraiser this weekend.

The dive will take place on Saturday, February 12 at Clammer’s Beach, 108 Conomo Point Road, at 8:30 a.m.

“It usually takes place in Front Beach, but the sea wall is under construction and there is no parking, so we moved it just down the street,” said the president of Friends of EES, Betsy McKeen. The city has temporarily suspended residents-only parking and sticker rules for Conomo Point and its side streets from 7 a.m. to noon for the event.

More than a dozen divers have already signed up, paying $20 each, and signed a waiver to take an ice bath in support of Essex’s parent-teacher organization.

The group is also accepting nominations from possible divers for $15. Nominees can escape an icy soak by donating $40.

“There will be a lot of kids, their families, and the teachers and staff from Essex Elementary diving,” McKeen said. She doesn’t just talk; she is going to bathe, just like her two children.

All proceeds will benefit the Friends of EES. Each year, Friends of EES raises funds, through grant writing and fundraising efforts such as the dive, to dedicate the following year to enriching the school and community experience of children in Essex.

The Essex Fire Service has agreed to provide ambulance services and rescue personnel in cold water gear in the event of an emergency.

More information and a registration and donation portal for the event can be found at http://friendsofees.com/.

Registration and waiver forms will also be available at the event.
