Retirees honor teachers and donate $ 12,000 in school supplies

FORT WAYNE, Indiana (WANE) – Teachers at Holland Elementary School have received $ 12,000 in school supplies. The residents of Towne House in Fort Wayne hosted a lunch and presented them with the gift on Wednesday afternoon.

Residents donate to the Holland Elementary Teachers Fund which was launched in 2015. More than half of Holland Elementary students are eligible for reduced or free meals and help with book costs. Many students come to school without the necessary supplies, and teachers often spend their own money to help.

Thirty-five teachers and staff from Holland Elementary are expected for the sixth annual luncheon. After lunch, residents of The Towne House will present a $ 342 gift card to each teacher to use to purchase school supplies or teaching resources.

“This is entirely a resident-driven initiative and exemplifies the heart of our community,” said Doug Vogel, Chaplain of The Towne House.

This year, 68 residents donated $ 10,000, the BHI Foundation contributed $ 1,000 and United Art and Education contributed $ 1,000. BHI is a charitable foundation that provides grants for community projects that improve and enhance the quality of life of residents of BHI communities while making them good neighbors. Towne House is one of six continuing care retirement communities operated by the not-for-profit BHI Senior Living.
