Raleigh, North Carolina — If you’re looking for school supplies, they might be more expensive and harder to find this year.
Luckily, school supply giveaways begin at the Salvation Army. Registrations are already full, as demand has increased.
The Salvation Army is collecting school supplies with more students returning in person this year as the need is greater. In addition to this, the fear of a supply shortage could impact the availability of school supplies.
Supply chain experts call it the perfect storm, a labor shortage, the Texas freeze and the pandemic are all contributing to production issues.
“During COVID, so many people weren’t working, factories closed,” said Dr. Robert Handfield, Distinguished Professor of Supply Chain Management at NC State. “They just need a bit of time to get back up and running with the sudden surge in demand. Everybody’s spending right now on appliances and stuff and they’re all in short supply. , Sadly.
Entries are already complete for today’s contest. There is a great need this year and the Salvation Army continues to collect supplies such as backpacks, pencils, pens and thumb drives. All are items that might be a bit more expensive this year.
“Supply shortages are not going to disappear overnight – on the contrary, they are likely to persist in one form or another well into 2022,” said Neil Shearing, group chief economist at Capital Economics.
