SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KY3) — When shopping duty free this weekend, consider shopping for extra school supplies for children in need in the Springfield area.
The Salvation Army is teaming up with Walmart for the annual “Stuff the Bus” event, which runs through Sunday, August 8.
Proceeds from the Stuff the Bus event benefit children at Bissett and York Elementary Schools in Springfield. Additional emergency supplies will be available from the Salvation Army for any children in need.
Organizers hope this will reduce pressure on parents in the new school year.
Jeff Smith, community development manager for the Salvation Army, said: “With us, we provide school supplies, it gives families a little extra cushion so they can pay those other bills. Some children would not have school supplies if agencies like the Salvation Army did not help them.
You can drop off school supplies in the red bins at your local Walmart Supercenters in Springfield, Nixa and Ozark. Donations of new items like pens, pencils, glue, notebooks are all welcome.
“They’ll need those same school supplies when they start school here in a few weeks,” Smith said.
If you can’t make it to one of the drop-off sites, the Salvation Army also has an online registry through Walmart where you can purchase supplies. The register can be accessed by clicking HERE.
